David Belke

David Belke is an Edmonton, Alberta based writer who fills many different roles in the theatre world: performer, producer, designer, teacher, award winning playwright. His first full length play was produced for the 1990 Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival, the largest theatre festival in North America. Since then he has written a new play for each subsequent festival becoming one the Fringe’s mainstays and one of the city’s favorite playwrights. 2014 marked his twenty-fifth consecutive premiere for the festival. At present Mr. Belke has seen over fifty of his plays professionally produced. His plays have been performed across Canada and the United States, as well as in England, Northern Ireland, India, Ghana, Israel, and Greece. Mr. Belke currently serves as Resident Playwright with Edmonton’s Shadow Theatre where he is in charge of new play development and is also an Artistic Associate. Shadow Theatre usually produces one of Mr. Belke’s plays a year, either a premiere or a remount. A multiple Sterling Award winner, Mr. Belke also received the prestigious Samuel French Inc.’s Canadian Playwrights’ Award in 2000 for That Darn Plot. They have since published six of his plays (which you can find on this very catalogue). Active in Edmonton’s theatre community Mr. Belke is, among other things, the Resident Playwright for Holy Trinity Anglican Church, the former Northern Alberta representative for the National Council of the Playwrights Guild of Canada, and is co-creator and co-organizer of Script Salon, a monthly play reading series showcasing new work by local playwrights.
