Merritt Ierley

Merritt Ierley is the author of 14 books and plays. His three plays for Samuel French—Eleanor for President, The Invention, and Three Hundred Leagues Over the Earth—all reflect on American history, as do most of his writings. Three books had forewords from the Smithsonian Institution, and two were undertaken with grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Mr. Ierley has given lectures at a number of colleges, libraries, and historical societies. A contributor to the Routledge Encyclopedia of 20th-Century Technology, he was an adviser to the PBS television series, The Frontier House, produced by Channel Thirteen/WNET, New York. Theater credits include writing the music for an Actors’ Equity production of Bertolt Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle. An extensive excerpt from his book The Comforts of Home was published in American Heritage magazine.
