To date, there has been no "original cast recording" from any production of "The Case of the Dead Flamingo Dancer." Three years after the East Hampton premiere and its subsequent two-week-limited-run, the authors created a demonstration recording of 10 musical numbers from the score to interest prospective producers. They assembled a top-notch cast of Broadway veterans, including several (past and, at the time, future) Tony Award winners, and an 18-piece band comprised of the New York theatre’s first-call pit players, with orchestrations specially fashioned by Larry Wilcox. The demo recording, issued only on cassette and never sold commercially, quickly accomplished its purpose: a London-based producer, Bill Kenwright, heard the score and secured the rights to mount the show in England, in association with Saraband Productions (see Production History).

NOTE: The demo recording does not represent the current version of the score; the authors made significant revisions in some of the numbers (mostly cuts and new lyrics) when the show was produced in England. Two songs are note-for-note the same in the show as on the tape: "Dancing Beautiful Music" and "Gussie’s Blues." The "Prologue," "It’s In the Feet!," "Something Special," "Little Ol’ Innocent Me" and "Like This" are about 95% identical. In the absence of any "definitive" recording, these demos still give a good idea of the feel and energy of the show. The text, as published by Samuel French, Inc. (see the Contact & Rights page), contains the authorized version of the dialogue and lyrics and the Piano/Conductor score (see NOTE below) contains the complete musical score in its final form.
