Basil comes across a strange man peering into the hotel fridge and makes his usual disparaging remarks. But Mr. Carnegie turns out to be from the Public Health Department and is not satisfied with the standards achieved and threatens closure. A long list of requirements has to be completed by the next day. Going to Manuel's room to enlist his help Basil finds Manuel's "hamster" which is, in fact, a rat, called Basil. Ordered to get rid of it, Manuel hides the rat in an outhouse although it escapes and is spotted by the Major in the bar. Basil puts rat poison on some veal but the infected piece is mixed up with other pieces. Mr. Carnegie passes the kitchen as fit and decides to take lunch there and orders the veal! Consternation as they try to find an uncontaminated piece. Meanwhile the rat pops up everywhere, including a tin of biscuits and the Major takes pot shots at it. As found in the collection, FAWLTY TOWERS.
