In this coming-of-age comedy, 13-year-old Franklin Robertson is just trying to survive life in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. in the mid-1980s. He's overweight. He's sexually confused. He doesn't have friends. His overworked parents don't understand him. His jock older brother torments him nonstop. He'd rather write stories than go on dates (not that he could get a date). His great comfort comes from the Twinkies he eats and the horror movies he watches every Saturday night at midnight, on a black-and-white TV set in his basement, introduced by the horror host Dr. Cerberus. In fact, Franklin feels certain that Dr. Cerberus can save his misfit life…
"In its darkest moments, DOCTOR CERBERUS sails into the deep waters of theater's favorite sea of tragedy, dysfunctional-family drama, and you realize what a cunning trick the playwright has performed: slipping a heartrending tragedy into the sleeve of a domestic comedy." —Orange County Register. "Who is scarier, The Mummy or Medea? And is there any paranormal activity more chilling than Mary Tyrone haunted by her past in Long Day's Journey into Night? Ever since Oedipus, the theater has known that there's nothing like family to spook us out. And home is certainly where the horror is in this sweet and canny portrait of the artist as a young fanboy…Doctor Cerberus takes you back to the moment all of us had to make a run for it, fleeing the ghost of an adolescent self, taking off into the unknown." —LA Times.
