Short Play

Joseph Schmitz has two loves, his wife Olga and the leather he has crafted all his life. While they are United States citizens, Joseph and Olga remain convinced that the old European ways are best and even though they have lost their son, their closeness to each other and the pride in Joseph's work keeps them going. One day, a young girl named Teresa comes looking for a leather belt for her father. She does not have enough money to pay for the belt but asks Joseph to hold it until she saves enough. Joseph does not believe in buying on credit and he refuses Teresa's request until he and Olga find out why she wants the belt. This play poignantly portrays the compassion two people have for a young girl who has lost someone she loves and the process by which they eventually discover something about their own love for each other. One int. set.
