I directed this a few years ago, and loved it (as did the audience). It's one of those that everyone has to completely buy into. It's a very visual show, but the key is to have good actors who can play bad actors (without going too over-the-top) and make a strong distinction between the actors and their acting in the roles they play in the inner play.
Play up the sight gags. Especially in Act III (which in our case, the audience went nuts over) - but the similar gags in Acts I and II have to be firmly planted to pay off in Act III

Was in a production of this play, and the audience does not react to any of the jokes, the writing is poor, and it is 3 acts of waiting for it to be over
