Summary

On death row, elder inmate Cleveland has taken young, mentally challenged Bradley under his wing and is trying to teach him to read. When word arrives that Bradley's new lawyer has arranged for him to take a mental competency test, Cleveland tries to convince Bradley that this is one test he does not want to pass.

History
The Test was first presented by Richard Lay and Sage Theatre Company at the Chernuchin Theatre in New York City in August 2001. It was directed by the author. The play was subsequently presented in its West Coast premiere by Playwrights' Circle at the Black Box Theatre in Palm Springs, California, in November 2001. It was directed by Rod Roeser.
