RECOGNITION / AWARDS

From Broadway

Summoned to a covent, Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist, is charged with assessing the sanity of a novice accused of murdering her newborn. Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior, determindly keeps young Agnes from the doctor, arousing Livingstone's suspicions further. Who killed the infant and who fathered the tiny victim? Livingstone's questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love leading to a dramatic, compelling climax.

A hit on Broadway and later on film.

This play will make some if not many audience members uncomfortable. Brashly dealing with complex topics ranging from theological debates to child molestation, there's something for everyone to disagree on. However, it is dealt with in such a manner that every individual will walk away with a different experience, a different interpretation, and a different way that they view the world.

The play features outstanding writing and rich characters.  When finally assembled (we used a soloist for Agnes' prayers) the show was extremely moving.  I was asked in an interview (as director) whether I found the show's pedigree (awards & nominations, etc.) intimidating - I replied that the opposite was true - that the writing was inspiring to me and to the cast, making the job of directing the play easier.

Despite long monologues the writing keeps the audience on their toes throughout. It tests the value of faith and justice, and views the development of relationships.
