An authentic American classic, this powerful and vital play captures the sardonic humor and the grief, both private and universal, of Wolfe's novel about a youth coming of age. Concentrating on the last third of Wolfe's story, the play vividly portrays Eugene Gant, his mother, who is obsessed by her material holdings and who maintains barriers against the love of her family, his father, a stonecutter imprisoned by his failures, and the brother who never breaks away.

Thomas Wolfe's quasi biographical novel was 40 chapters long and covered all of his early life.  Ketti Frings did an amazing job structuring the highlights into an incredible play winning the Pulitzer Prize in the process.   The coming of age story of the 17 year old Eugene is a powerful one that is both moving and funny.   He dreams of going to college but a hard drinking father, a domineering mother make even daily life a battle ground.  Along the way complications include the tragic death of his beloved brother Ben and a romance with an older woman, Laura.

The 18 roles include the strong five leads but around six sizable supporting roles as well as an assortment of smaller featured parts.   With one major set (the original show used a revolve to change into the 4 bedrooms needed.)   There is one other set of the father's marble statuary and headstone shop.

Anthony Perkins starred in the original production.  This play is a fine slice of American life in the south in the year 1916.

The art and skill of adapting a well know novel into a play is a daunting task.  Frings does this in a most profound way.  She not only captures the dramatic and humorous aspects of The original novel, but her order of events and stagecraft allows the viewer to to inner core of the tortured Gants.  The dialogue between Ben, Eugene, W.O., and Eliza are beautifully woven and the peppering of the "boarders" lines and gestures make this a play of high regard.  I have directed this play twice and now many years later I still find it a rare gem to read.  I still find new beauty in the text.  Samuel French is very lucky to have the publishing rights of this American classic.  I recommend it highly and without any reservation.
