When GRAND HOTEL opened at the Martin Beck Theater on November 12, 1989, the reviews were largely positive, praising Tune's inventive direction and choreography. Also singled out was the now legendary performace of Michael Jeter, who won just about every award possible for his performance as the dying accountant Otto Kringelein. The original cast of GRAND HOTEL also featured NINE's Karen Akers (the original Luisa) as well as future Tony winner for the 2003 revival of NINE, Jane Krakowski. GRAND HOTEL garnered 12 Tony Award nominations, winning five, including best direction and choreography for Tommy Tune.
