Artie Shaugnessy is a songwriter with visions of glory. Toiling by day as a zoo-keeper, he suffers in seedy lounges by night, plying his wares at piano bars in Queens, New York where he lives with his wife, Bananas. Who is. Much to the chagrin of Artie's downstairs mistress, Bunny Flingus who'll sleep with him anytime but refuses to cook until they are married. On the day the Pope is making his first visit to the city, Artie's son Ronny goes AWOL from Fort Dix stowing a home made-bomb intended to blow up the Pope in Yankee Stadium. Also arriving are Artie's old school chum, now a successful Hollywood producer, Billy Einhorn with starlet girlfriend in tow, who holds the key to Artie's dreams of getting out of Queens and away from the life he so despises. But like many dreams, this promise of glory evaporates amid the chaos of ordinary lives.

John Guare is simply one of my favorite living playwriting brains. This play exemplifies his style; crazy-funny, poignant, political ideological satire, with real humanity at its heart. This story is an undeniably important exploration of the American Dream and family from a completely singular perspective. Set in Queens on the famous day Pope Paul VI visits NYC in 1965, Guare introduces us to a Zookeeper who dreams of penning ditties in Hollywood, his schizoid, shut-in wife (aptly named Bananas), and his quietly explosive son, a GI headed straight for Vietnam. Oh, and there are some crazy nuns, and a silent movie star.  While you're laughing your head off you might suddenly realize that what you're finding so funny at once really isn’t funny at all. And therein lies the beauty of Guare. Replete with some truly beautiful passages of soul-searching, this play is stuffed with stunning moments that run the emotional gambit. Wacky and unhinged, yet heart-wrenching, this play is a constantly changing entity with definitive of a style all its own.
