The show arrived on Broadway at the St. James Theater on April 19, 2001, and quickly became the hottest ticket in the history of Broadway, hailed by critics and audiences alike. The show dominated the awards season that year, winning a record 12 Tony Awards. In addition, the cast recording won the Grammy for Best Musical show album. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick stayed with the show through March 17, 2002. They were replaced by Steven Webber and Henry Goodman, but Goodman was let go from the show after only a few performances. Eventually, Roger Bart and Brad Oscar, who originated the roles of Carmen Ghia and Franz Liebkind, stepped into the roles of Bloom and Bialystock.
