Duff Rose, an actor, speaks to us from a bar in New York in the year 1975. He is recalling his childhood, traveling with his father's theatre company, playing in and around London during the Blitz in World War II. He is older, jaded, drinks too much, and is increasingly discouraged by the sinking fortunes of the theatre in general and their company in particular, but in his memory of nearly empty theatres, dark air raid shelters and rehearsals among the ruins he finds something to keep him going.
