Based on Kitty Genovese's murder, witnessed by thirty neighbors unwilling to aid her. Set in the Plaza Hotel's Palm Court, Virginia comes to stay with her aunt and uncle. A strange man's been trailing her from Chicago. Her relatives are too busy talking to pay much attention to Virginia and a strange man rapes and murders her in front of them. He leaves and the relatives finally see what's happened. They try to exit quietly until the uncle notices the audience. Guilt dawns on them, but the aunt implies the audience is just as guilty as they, too, had only watched.
