RECOGNITION / AWARDS

Andre Gide was a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

The story of Joseph K begins when he is arrested without specification of charges. He never finds out what he is accused of. The worlds of day and night, of reality and nightmare begin to elide. First his landlady is sniffing suspicions; then his uncle is disgruntled; then a painter offers to get him off lightly; since he is already guilty without a trial, why not try for a provisional acquittal, which will free him until the next time someone wants to arrest him? Joseph K, guilty without cause, without any knowledge of guilt, is driven through torture to death, his only freedom.
