Alan Ayckbourn's version of the first of the famous Aldwych farces was produced by the National Theatre. It is the story of an unsuccessful inventor who inherits the life interest in a fortune which is to revert on his death to his cousin George Maitland. As Cousin George is thought to have died abroad, the inventor has the brilliant idea of "dying" so that he can resurrect himself as his cousin and avoid paying his enormous debts. Complications arise in the form of George's wife, another Maitland imposter (the butler's brother) and finally the real George Maitland himself!

Very, very funny farce.  Meaty parts, absurd situations, split second timing, rapid pacing.
Robert Duke 9/30/2015 7:44 AM
Absolutely marvelous for a high school cast.  Delicious parts for everybody.

Even the application of the Ayckbourn 'touch' to this dated Aldwych farce coulldn't (for me) breath life into a piece that should have been left well alone and consigned to theatre history. Amazingly the National Theatre produced the play 'in repertory' and used the incredibly talent Michael Gambon who must have wondered why he'd been lumbered with being in such a dire piece while he gained well-deserved plaudits for A View From The Bridge. Tons of Money has the thinnest of plots and is about as funny as a bad case of measles. Without Ayckbourn's name attached to it, I'd put money on it that the play would never had been published.  Tons of Tat would be a more appropriate title!
