"Loesser's score is charming and so is the show. Beautifully sung and brightly acted, the production staged by director John Doyle offers an aptly breezy account of a light-hearted musical that's as refreshing as the first breath of springtime." -Michael Sommers, New Jersey Newsroom
WHERE'S CHARLEY? was the first Broadway show by Frank Loesser, who had made a name for himself as a popular songwriter (see the revue PERFECTLY FRANK). It immediately demonstrated the master's easy command of wit and romance, sophistication and high jinks. Delivering "Once in Love With Amy," "My Darling, My Darling" and "The New Ashmolean Marching Society" to the hit parade, WHERE'S CHARLEY? launched Loesser into the songwriting stratosphere. The original production opened on October 11, 1948 at the St. James Theatre with Ray Bolger (Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz) in the lead. It was a huge hit for Bolger--who won a Tony Award for his performance. He nightly brought the house lights up on the audience midway through "Once in Love with Amy" and led them in a merry sing-along.
