Summary
In this true tale from the bloody and wonderful tangle of Scottish history, Muriel is plagued by terrible nightmares of being a small child, having her nurse bite off the last joint of her little finger, and her mother branding her with a red hot key. Raised by the Campbells and expected to marry one of them so they can control the ancestral lands of Cawdor she is heiress to, Muriel step by step unravels the mystery of her nightmare and her family's dark past, through a labyrinth of terrifying revelations and stunning reversals in her understanding of what's really been going on.
