Jane Austen's
Sense and Sensibility
adapted by Jessica Swale

When their wealthy half-brother cheats them of their fortune, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are left penniless. They are forced to leave the comforts of Norland Park and relocate to chilly Barton Cottage in Devonshire, but when John Willoughby, a handsome stranger, arrives one day with a rain-drenched Marianne in his arms, the sisters are convinced that their fortunes are changed forever.

Eminently sensible Elinor pines for quiet, kind-hearted Edward Ferrars, but the impulsive Marianne loses herself in the idea of her hero on horseback, and for a girl who feasts on poetry and music, what else is there to do in Devon but dream of rescue?

In Jessica Swale’s delightful adaptation of Austen’s dearly-loved classic, we follow the fortunes of Elinor and Marianne as they chase their dreams from Devonshire to London and back.

The play was first presented at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury, in April 2014.

My amateur drama club that consists of mainly of students and young adults had a marvellous time with the play. It requires hardly any set. We just had some chairs and tables, a couch and a grand piano (not necessary but nice to have). However, we had lots of period costumes. The action is swift. Ensemble scenes alternate with dialogues. It was useful to have a small seperate stage to indicate a seperate setting when two scenes run parrallel to each other and intertwine - a very nice touch. There is a duel scene, a ball and some live music (Marianne should sing some songs). A great adaptation which contains a lot of funny lines, romance without ever turning melodamatic and attractive bigger and smaller parts. We had a cast of 8f, 8m, and one could have some more 3-4 persons do minor parts
