Comedy

This is a refreshingly "different" kind of play: delightfully amusing and yet a decided challenge to the players, a fascinating exercise for the imagination. It can be played on a bare stage, with few props or none at all. All parts in the play are of equal size and everyone has an opportunity for a big scene or two. Set in a southern city on a "Warm Wednesday." There are many scenes and a frequent shirting back and forth in time; yet by the ingenious employment of "The Lady" and "The Gentleman" - sort of glorified stage managers - the action is never confusing or difficult to follow. The story concerns the lovely but very ambitious Sherry Roncier, who has disappeared on the eve of her marriage to a rich and eligible young man. Previously, Sherry had jilted Jeff Kingman, the boy who had been in love with her since childhood, and it was Jeff's return from New York to plead against her going through with the marriage that motivated Sherry's disappearance. During the long day and evening while she is gone, her family and friends reminisce and relive the events of the past that illuminate Sherry's character and her reasons for acting as she did. When she finally reappears, she is chastened by self-knowledge and ready to start over again. Recommended to any group looking for something novel and off the beaten path.
