The year is 1669 a bawdy and troublesome time. Theaters have just reopened after seventeen years of Puritan suppression. There is a surge in dramatic writing and the first English actresses appear on stage. Playhouse Creatures focuses on five of the most famous (Nell Gwyn, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall, Doll Common and Mary Betterton) to provide a moving and often comic account of the precarious lives of Restoration actresses.

We undertook this play as our first ever performance for a newly formed group of inexperienced actresses.

It was a challenge to say the least. 5 strong female character parts which switch between 'dressing room/real life' and 'on stage' life reading parts from Shakespeare.

Lots of props and costume quick changes. Some 'bawdy' language. Some very long 'monologues' to be learnt, difficult for novice actresses. Some very emotional scenes to deal with...........................including references to abortion

But every long rehearsal, every minute of laborious line learning, every sweat inducing quick change was worth it and we thoroughly enjoyed performing this play .

Don't shy away from it , embrace it, work hard at getting it right and you will be rewarded by 'meeting' 5 strong , humorous, gutsy women from yesteryear whose stories are not so different from the women of today
