Summary

Penelope is about a teenager dealing with the failed education system, racism, sexism, and the hate and ignorance surrounding it all. Penelope has to walk the tightrope of life to survive her circus of a school.

History

Penelope was presented in a staged reading as part of the Thespian Playworks program at the 2016 Thespian Festival in June 2016 under the direction of Dominic Orlando.

ERIS - Pronounced EE-riss. Thirty-four. Penelope’s mother. A symbol of love and misunderstanding. A prostitute due to the never-evolving social pyramid of Yankeedom. Penelope’s standard of beauty. 
THE CHORUS OF JUDGEMENT - The fully cloaked Ku Klux Klan. 
PEENELOPE* - Also known as Black Female 77. Sixteen. An orphan, hardworking with a sweet soul, but feisty when tested. 
KLAN MAN / RINGLEADER OF CHAOS - Owner of the institution, he is the father of Saul. A shadow of hatred. Forty-nine. 
THE CHORUS OF INSECURITY - Teenagers. The circus students. Races must be accurate: Native American female, white female, black male, Asian female, Latina female, and one butch lesbian female of any race but black. 
ADVISER OF DREAMS / OWNER OF NIGHTMARES* - Thirties. The school counselor. 
CLUELESS CLOWN* - Forties. A mean and spastic spirit, complacent clown and teacher. 
DING DONG* - Eighteen. Short in height. He pities Clueless Clown (due to his instability) and is only seen in the beginning of the play. 
FREEDOM OF SPEECH - Twenties. Personification of the First Amendment. 
SAUL* - Seventeen. White male. Son of the Ringleader. Aspiring Ringleader and student in the program. Charming. 
BOOK-KEEPER - Forties. Kooky librarian. 
CLOCK - Time itself. Any gender. Any age from sixteen to forty. 
GAEA - Pronounced GAY-ah. Mature/elderly female. Mother Earth. 
GAEA'S MASTER - Forty. American greed and consumption, also known as capitalism. A white businessman with no time to waste. 
THE CHORUS OF DESIRE - Chorus members in their teens or early twenties, who represent sexuality. 
THE ORGASM - Sixteen. A personified moment of ecstasy and vulnerability. 
REGRET - Played by the same actor as Eris. A representation of Penelope’s fears. 
JIM CROW* - Saul’s Grandfather. 
SAUL'S MOTHER - Doubles with the Book-Keeper. 
PROSTITUTE* - Twenties. Penelope’s godmother. A hardworking call girl. Black.
