Description

Full Length Musical

Rest assured, this is not the original text you studied in high school! This award-winning adaptation takes the classic Greek tragedy out of the Mediterranean and into the backwoods of West Virginia with hilarious consequences. Oedipus Rex is, of course, the age-old tale of the poor guy who was separated from his parents at birth and grew up to murder his father and marry his mother. In this version, Oedipus (Eddie) and Jocasta (Jo) travail through clairvoyant midwives, incestuous relationships, and idiot psychic children until the hideous, hysterical truth is revealed. The play concludes without the wholesale destruction found in Sophocles' version, but in modern-day, capitalistic style, Eddy and Jo happily decide to market their story to the tabloids and talk shows. Featured songs: Somethin' Just Ain't Right in Thebeville, Let's Ditch 'im, Safety Orange, Oh, Tyresius, The Fertility Song, and Relations.

I LOVED  this script! I grew up studying Greek Drama at Brown University and my dad is from Athens, so have read and seen countless productions of the classic. This version is wonderful because it is smart, funny, cheeky and TRUE! It is such a fresh take on the classic. It harkens back to the source with laugh out loud originality. It reminds me of a Charles Busch play or Diane Paulus's The Donkey Show. Please produce this show so I can see it staged!!

Bob and Anne were the most creative folks to come out of UMCP since Henson. I had the pleasure of working with them on the original production of this show, playing to standing room audiences at UMCP and ACTF. There never was or will be a more ridiculous show rooted smartly in classic convention. Check it out!

One of the funniest shows I've ever seen, this play strikes the perfect farcical balance and takes no prisoners.  A sit back and laugh treat for fans of the classic, original tale, who don't hold it TOO preciously close to their hearts.  Way before Avenue Q, there was Oedipus The Musical!
