Winner! 2002 Baker's Plays High School Playwrighting Contest
The rock musical for the new millennium, is the story of a teen pop singing sensation, Daphne, who is returning to perform her hit single, "Starstruck," at her high school prom. The kids at Messina High are all excited about the upcoming event. The senior class president, Claudia, decides she wants everyone to have a date for the prom, especially her feuding friends, Ben and Bebe (loosely based on the Shakespearean characters Benedict and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing). Claudia attempts to get them together by using modern technology to spread rumors that Ben likes Bebe and Bebe likes Ben. When Ben and Bebe find out what's going on, they decide to give Claudia and her boyfriend a little bit of her own medicine, and everyone winds up unhappy. Depressed and discouraged, the kids go to their haven-the mall-to lift their moods. At the mall, the girls get ready for prom, and the two main couples resolve their differences. Happy again, all the kids go to the prom, where Daphne appears and everyone sings "Starstruck" in the surprising, funny finale.
Starstruck! has been called "Bye Bye Birdie meets Grease with songs about shopping, going online and getting a date" by the pop music critic of the Atlanta Journal/Constitution. It's a play today's teens crav'” one written by them and for them and enjoyed by all ages.
