The award-winning author of The Diviners, And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson, and Crow and Weasel describes his newest play as "A children's story for adults." When June's father dies, she prays for a healer to come to the small town of Gray, so that no one will ever suffer again; the next thing she knows, there's a tornado, and a man in a balloon blows into town claiming to be a doctor. At first, the new doctor cures anything and everything, but soon the town's preacher takes ill with a mysterious plague. And then the plague begins to spread. Set in Indiana during the late 1800's, Anatomy of Gray deals with death, loss, love, and healing in a unique coming of age story.

This was a unique and excellent drama to put together. The set is largely representational and what set pieces we used (a couple of benches, stools, a table, and a boat) were moved around by the actors during the show. The set allowed for creativity and very good acting. The miming of the clothesline scene was raved about by audiences. Our lighting designer spent a lot of time for this show as lighting and weather are critical effects.  The show also has good depth of character which forced our actors to stretch and grow. While this is a serious tragedy, it also has comedic moments, mostly in Act I, and audiences commented on how warm the show was. Done well, it's a beautiful though tragic story. It has 9 named characters, but our high school added an additional 8 to act as townspeople and patients for the doctor. That worked really well and gave more of a sense of community. I highly recommend this play.

This is a great ensemble piece with a lot of depth. Set is minimal. Lighting is a huge component.

Many great roles for ensemble cast.
