The highlights of a love relationship and the tensions against the relationship are vividly portrayed in this touching play. The young couple, Mary Pat and Tom, separated by the disturbing events of their lives - college failure, unemployment and military service - renew their love by remembering their early courtship days, the advice of Tom's father and that of their high school teacher, Miss Copeland, who had given them an inspiration by which to live. Using an experimental technique, the chorus is transformed into children, wedding guests and soldiers. Relevant and nostalgic all at once, this is a tremendously exciting play for competition use.

I highly enjoy chorus-based scripts. It gives actors the opportunity and challenge to work together and to rely on one another to present a solid show! I think "The Little Toy Dog"  would be a good challenge for high school students, especially for competition. The script allows for much creativity to happen on stage, allowing chorus members to create the changing scenes with their movement and voices. It's a very poetic script, which is shown by the dialogue of the chorus members. Also, Mary Pat and Tom share very cute, dramatic, and realistic scenes. I loved their first encounter together. Scenes portraying Tom's struggles, such as jobs and the war, seemed somewhat short; they are presented quickly within the script, but I understand the main focus truly is the relationship of Mary Pat and Tom. I would love to try and direct this play at our school!
