The Board of Trustees has voted to close the church because of the lack of finances and a general spirit of apathy on the part of the congregation. Under the prayerful guidance of old Grandmother Watkins, the practical faith of Janitor Ollie, and the sweetness of Martha, Peter's wife, not only is the church reborn, but a great reawakening comes to the community.
REVERAND PETER YOUNG - The forty year old pastor of the struggling church, who is sensitive and feels he is to blame for lack of cooperation in the church. MARTHA YOUNG - Peter's wife, a woman of charm and goodness.RAYMOND YOUNG - Their son, twelve years old.LUCILLE YOUNG - Their daughter, nine years old.JOHN BLAKE - The chairman of the church board. He is a banker and proud of his wealth and position, who is very large and inclined to be pompous.CHARLES HAMILTON - The treasurer of the church. He is a thin man, lean and keen of face, who is very cautious and not a born leader.GRANDMOTHER WATKINS - One of the pillars of the church, well past seventy and still a great leader. She had been friends with John since childhood.GRACE HALAWAY - A young organist who is a close friend of Mrs. Young’s and more than willing to do her part in the church.OLLIE OLSON - The old janitor who has been with the church since it started and feels he is part of church life.CHOIR MEMBERS - As many as desired.CANDLE BEARERS - As many as desired.
