Summary

Here is something truly innovative in children's theatre: real life scenes about family and friends presented in a captivating, moving, humorous and thought-provoking way. The play toured extensively in the Midwest with the highly acclaimed ArtReach Touring Theatre of Cincinnati, receiving enthusiastic praise at the Great Lakes Children's Theatre Festival, 1981.

The stories are an ingenious blend of humor, suspense and action, revolving around four actors playing children waiting to be chosen for basketball teams. There's Reggie, Melinda, Danny, and the real charmer of the play little Georgia, the new kid in school who wears glasses. She, too, is finally chosen for the basketball team in one of the most dramatic and touching scenes ever written for children.

A charming, contemporary play about friendship, love, and feelings that is a celebration of childhood with all its joys and changes. It is easy to stage, perfect for touring, and a delight to perform.

History
Choosing Sides for Basketball was originally produced by the American Repertory Theatre of Cincinnati and performed in over 100 schools in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. It was performed at the Ohio Theatre Alliance Children's Theatre Festival in 1981, and the Great Lakes Children's Theatre Festival in 1981.
REGGIE - A boy from a well-to-do family who is outwardly self-assured, but insecure inwardly. He argues with his parents but is afraid for their love.
MELINA - A girl who is dependent on her family and receives much attention from them. She is fanciful with a vivid imagination, and sometimes narrow minded when dealing with other children.
DANNY - A small boy for his age who is just becoming aware of adults and how their lives differ from his. He is gaining some maturity, confused by the new baby in his family, and ambitious to do what is right.
GEORGIE - The new kid in school whose real name is Georgia, who takes a lot of kidding because of her name, and works hard and is good in her studies. Georgie is the one who is left out in the group.
