McIVER - 40s;  wiry; forceful; energetic man
SARY - late 30s; thin-boned; tight-mannered; grasping and cash-hard woman
HAWKINS - burly; good-natured; obliging hulk of a man
BAILEY - very spirited; young river man
JORY BULLARD - a burly bull of a man
JASON HUNT - a tall, rugged, weather-tanned man in his early 30s. His movements are quiet and easy. He wears a shirt of homespun, fringed buckskin britches, and moccasins
HANNAH WEBSTER - a tall, poised woman of 35 or so, her propriety not yet hardened into primness
RUTH TOBY - a gentle and lovely woman of 22 or so, on the threshold of self-discovery. Her dress is a heavy black mourning dress
BLUNDER - a sinewy man, clad in buckskin revealing a compact, muscular body. A knife sheath hangs from his belt. His movements are supple, with cat-like grace, an almost primitive swiftness in them. He seems older than his years only because of his shaggy beard.
TOM BOWIE - a bulky giant of a man, weathered and hard-built, in homespun shirt, leather britches and heavy boots, muddy with travel. In his early, rugged 40s.
