Reese, a rootless youth, is hospitalized with a broken arm and is transferred to the terminal cancer ward for reasons they won't divulge. He could leave, but he's got no place to go. Reese finds one jibbering patient has electrodes in his skull an involuntary victim of medical experimentation. And Reese learns more of the horrors of the experimentation room when another patient in error tampers with the electrodes, reverts to infancy, and becomes irreversibly insane just as Reese's turn for experimentation arrives.
