Summary
Four brothers gather on a riverbank to engage in male rites of summer. These include the sexual initiation of the youngest at the hands of Patch, a free spirit who proves unexpectedly reluctant to play her part. This play in the author's trilogy which spans several months in a drought stricken Ozarks community in the late 1950s sparkles with vivid characters, tart dialogue and gentle humor, providing a tender portrait of a bygone era while exploring themes of contemporary significance.
