Overview
Haunted by the mysterious death of his young wife, the great writer of
odd psychological ghost and mystery tales Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu stays
up late, drinking green tea and writing, the victim of an increasingly
disturbing series of nightmares and hallucinations about dying in
Phoenix Park, Dublin. One night, walking alone there, he comes across
Carmilla, a mysterious and seductive young woman who claims to be an
actress abandoned by her company. He takes her home to be his secretary,
but gradually begins to realize that she seems to be at once the
embodiment of a vampire girl he has written about, his troubled and
seductive sister-in-law, and a ghostly figure his wife kept seeing in
the mirror before her death. Reality and memory mix with nightmares,
hallucinations and creatures from his dark stories of murder and the
supernatural as Le Fanu struggles towards the truth in a vortex of
horror, with special appearances by Richard Brinsley Sheridan and
Emmanuel Swedenborg. An eerie, erotic, frightening and sometimes funny
mystery. Be careful what you write. In LeFanu's Dream & Other Plays.
