Overview

This immediately popular success, already well known on two continents, is among the most attractive comedies for production by schools, colleges, and community theatres. In inimitable style, the poet-dramatist shows how Joan, the daughter of old Thomas Greenleaf, proprietor of the Bird in Hand Inn, and Gerald Arnwood, the squire's son, fall in love, to Greenleaf's consternation. But Joan sees no harm in the young man. However, her father takes matters in his own hands and drives his daughter home from a meeting of the young people, thereby arousing the inmates of the Inn, who discuss the situation and help Greenleaf make his decision. At last the situation is cleared up when the youth's father makes a proper formal proposal.
