Overview

Loosely based on the life of American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jason Robards made a sensation on Broadway in this exploration of the "lost generation," garnering multiple awards with Robards named Best Actor of the season as Manley Halliday. Once, with wife Jere, the toast of the "jazz-age" set, beautiful and talented; they have now both slid into a dissolute life. Offered a job writing a big budget studio picture, Halliday whose contempt for the commercialism of Hollywood has driven him to self-loathing and alcoholism, reasons the money will get him out of debt. While Jere convalesces in a New York sanitarium, Manley takes the film and finds himself with a collaborator, one of the "new generation" who neither knows nor cares of his once "glittering" reputation.
