SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Basic Information about Submissions
Samuel French, Inc. is an international publisher and licenser of plays and musicals.
We do not publish or license screenplays, poetry, novels, etc.
Our primary market is the United States and Canadian amateur and regional theater. This inevitably influences our publication choices. We favor plays and musicals that include a generous number of female roles, due to the abundance of women in the theatrical markets we serve. Plays that the entire family can attend and enjoy are also given precedence, particularly those appropriate for the Junior High and High School markets. We do publish more adult-themed works as well, and these are usually attended by a substantial amount of publicity, for example in the form of reviews in nationally circulated media, such as The New York Times. The majority of plays that we publish have been successfully produced by a prominent theater. These are not hard and fast rules, but they do offer an idea of the types of work in which we are interested.
How to Submit Your Play or Musical
At present, we do not accept email submissions. You may send one copy of your script to the following address and attention:
Samuel French Inc.
45 West 25th Street, Second Floor
New York, NY 10010
Attn: Editorial Department
Please include a cover letter (including the play's genre, estimated duration, cast size, and synopsis), production history, and any reviews. If you are submitting a musical and you have a cast recording, please include a CD. Do not send more than one script at a time, as flooding us with your work will not be to your benefit.
We do request that you format your script according to standard playscript format. If you need more information about that method of formatting, a good guide is provided in Professional Playscript Format Guidelines & Sample by Mollie Ann Meserve, which available for purchase on our website.
We do attempt to respond to submissions within twelve weeks, but reaction time may vary due to fluctuations in volume, and could be up to a year. Please include a SASE with your submission, in the event we need to return the script to you. If you do not include a SASE, we are not obligated to return your submission.
