SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Attention:
Our submission policy has changed. As of October 6th 2008, Samuel French, Inc. will accept only solicited and agent submitted manuscripts. Playwrights must send query letters regarding unsolicited submissions. Please read this entire page if you are interested in submitting your work.
What does this change mean to me, the playwright?
This adjustment to our policy is our attempt to expedite the process of submission. We are still very interested in, and actively seeking out, new works. We want to hear from you! All you need to do is submit a query letter and 10 page sample of your work (with supporting documents, as detailed below). After we have reviewed your query and sample, we will contact you, at which time we may ask you to submit your full manuscript and any other accompanying materials.
What kinds of submissions does Samuel French want?
Samuel French, Inc. is an international publisher and licensor of a vast array of plays and musicals. We do not publish or license screenplays, poetry, novels, etc. The bulk of our catalogue is made up of plays that have been successfully produced by a prominent theater before they were published. These are usually attended by a substantial amount of publicity. We generally recommend that those new to playwriting put their efforts into getting productions before attempting to get published, as the production process naturally helps the playwright edit and adjust their work to achieve the desired effect. Also, please note that we rarely publish individual one-act plays. We are much more likely to publish an anthology or collection of one-acts.
How do I submit my query?
Submission queries may be submitted using the form below, which allows for the attachment of a 10-page sample of the play, one MP3 file of music, and links to information about previous productions. This new form is the fastest, easiest way for us to review and respond to your query. We request that hard copy queries be sent only if electronic submission is inaccessible.
All plays submitted for publication are expected to be in their final form. The requested 10-page writing sample must be from a completed, proof-read script ready for publication. Samuel French does not accept proposals, drafts, or partially-completed scripts. If you are unsure whether or not to send in your query, please contact us at publications@samuelfrench.com.
Please follow these submission guidelines closely, as they are designed with the benefit of the playwright in mind. Unsolicited full scripts, either in hard-copy form or as an electronic attachment, will be returned to the author. Sending an unsolicited full script does not in any way increase your chances of being published.
