Adapted by Steve Lawson from the correspondence of Tennessee Williams between 1945 and 1957 Biographical monologue 1m BLANCHE AND BEYOND is the stage sequel to A DISTANT COUNTRY CALLED YOUTH (published by Samuel French in 2005). While the first play traced the evolution of a young man finding his artistic voice, BLANCHE AND BEYOND spans the peak of Williams’ career - the period of Streetcar, Rose Tattoo, Summer and Smoke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - and explores a no-longer obscure playwright facing the seismic shock of international fame. When BLANCHE AND BEYOND opened the Tennessee Williams New Orleans Festival in 2006, The Times-Picayune praised “letters skillfully chosen and edited by director Steve Lawson, performed with finesse, sly amusement, and disquieting doubt by Richard Thomas. That artists of the caliber of Thomas and Lawson are part of the festival keeps its standards high indeed.” Variety called the show “a literate and entertaining piece of theater that should have a long life.” Fee: $75 per performance.
