Comedy

Sheena is a somebody who wants to be a nobody. Loli is a nobody desperate to be a somebody. In this hilarious world premiere comedy about Hollywood, fame and the TMZ, renowned playwright Jane Martin takes dead aim at our culture of celebrity with Somebody/Nobody. So you think you want to be famous? So did teen idol and "shark-movie" star Sheena Keener, the darling of the press, the obsession of the paparazzi, and the Goddess of the 'E! Channel'. But now she can't stand to be looked at anymore and her Godzilla of an agent is on the warpath. When Sheena ends up on the doorstep of naïve newcomer Loli, a recent arrival from Flatt, Kansas, it's a wild ride on the road to fame.

"The characters in Somebody/Nobody might be pathetic, if their creator treated them with any sympathy at all. But the comedy here isn't character-driven. Playwright Jane Martin plays with her characters like Barbie dolls. Everything they do and say is imposed upon them by the needs of the plot and the punch lines. Loli (pronounced Lowly), for example, has no real voice of her own, freely mixing SAT vocabulary into an otherwise limited folksy lexicon. 'He is inconstant as a pinball,' she says of her cousin Joe Don, survivalist and bounty hunter. In another scene, she drops the $5 word 'vituperous,' then fumbles over 'sprinkler things.' No question, it's a funny show, in an over-the-top, sketch-comedy kind of way." —The Arizona Republic
