Summary

It is 1923 in the town of Jericho, Rhode Island. Opposed to her younger brother's pending marriage, truculent and old maidish hairdresser Maggie Conroy is in constant conflict with him. When John finally moves out with his bride, their widowed mother insists they take in a boarder. Maggie is against it, but mother prevails and Buddy McCormack, a slightly simple minded, good natured young man moves in. He develops an attachment to sugar and vinegar Maggie. His awkward wooing slowly melts her heart and she blossoms, but family and social pressures and her own fears dampen Maggie's desire until she reluctantly rejects Buddy. Buddy must move and Maggie is left with the regret of having lost the love of her life. This honest and deeply affecting love story is the ninth entry in the author's projected cycle of twelve Jericho plays. Also see The Octette Bridge Club, After the Dancing in Jericho and Getting the Gold.
