Plain and Fancy premiered on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on January 27, 1955. Directed by Morton DaCosta, the production featured Richard Derr, Shirl Conway, Will B. Able, Gloria Marlowe, Douglas Fletcher Rodgers, Barbara Cook, David Daniels and Scott Walker.
