Summary
On a restaurant terrace in Rome in 1930, Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley are reminiscing about a Roman holiday they shared many years before. Mrs. Slade is envious of Mrs. Ansley's daughter's engagement to a young and rich Marchese and cannot resist a spiteful jibe, thereby shattering a cherished memory.
