Full Length Play, Comedy  /  1m, 3f

"Rosary O'Neill's Gentleman examines the indisputable source of most 'Southern mystique': Southern families. Imagine a sort of twisted and faster-paced version of Carson McCullers' The Member of the Wedding, this one starring Becky Allen as an angry aunt who delivers the bridegroom's insane sister to the couple on their wedding night. Violence ensues as the young medical student and his aging wife struggle to survive - spiritually and physically - the wrath of his jealous family. Additional Info

A Louisiana Gentleman is a comedy that exposes Blaine Ashton, a young medical student desperate to choose among three women: his manic sixteen year-old sister, a seductive middle aged actress, and his alcoholic, duty-driven aunt. A hilarious climax forces Blaine to decide in which world he belongs and bridge the painful gap to adulthood. A Christmas reunion unites eccentric New Orleanians in a miracle of uncanny acceptance. Especially powerful roles for women and a tour de force role for a young man. One interior set in the French Quarter of New Orleans provides opportunities for background music and visuals.

  • Setting: BLAINE ASHTON’S apartment in Baroness Micaela de Pontalba’s Buildings, the French Quarter, New Orleans. The apartment fronts the old heart of the city—Jackson Square, the Cabildo Museum, the Saint Louis Cathedral, and the Presbytere—shrines now molding in the humid air from the Mississippi River. With their high ceilings, tall windows, and brick, the apartments remind one of the Palais Royal, the Parisian buildings that inspired them. Giant furnishings bleached by the sun—a chaise lounge, an armoire, an oriental carpet of raspberry and cream—lend the room a mythic poignancy. The apartment seems to scream “If I had to do it over again, I would prioritize extravagance.” And this selfishness is seen in the slightly empty feeling that surrounds the effigies to the past, the statues, the portraits of family members with their smiles of deceit. Over the mantle, a portrait of Dr. James Ashton lords over the marble busts of his children, Blaine and Dale, below.
