Summary
Romeo and Juliet updated to the 1920s London suburbs. Charlie Tutt and Betty Ramsbottom want to get married, but there are many obstacles. For one thing, Mr. Tutt has the utmost contempt for the Ramsbottom family. When the Tutts pay their first official call on the Ramsbottoms, Tutt is rude to his timid little host in every way. But Mrs. Tutt had once been a barmaid and a misconstrued remark by her hostess adds to the tension. Events lead to a distressing family row that is delightful on stage and the reverse in real life. The second act opens with the Wedding Breakfast. Charlie is now in business for himself and it is flourishing. But then a detective from the Yard arrests Charlie for fraudulent transactions. But it all ends happily, almost incredibly, with the families singing together on New Year's Eve.
