It is the early summer of 1939 in a big industrial American city, and social worker Miss Morgan is unprepared for the extreme destitution she encounters on a call to the Pocciotti family flat. Mrs. Pocciotti claims to be doing the best she can with a husband in and out of the city sanitarium and mostly male children who grow up and leave the family. Only Miss Morgan's questions finally reveal that getting by has involved the willful neglect of a family burden hiding in "the dark room."
