Overview

In this engrossing look at the past history of African Americans, Frank Carter, a black activist, has been wounded during a robbery and is holed up in an empty tenement apartment. The area is surrounded by police searching for him. He can do nothing but sit and wait it out During that time he relives his whole life, reminiscing about his troubled childhood, his family relations, his affair with a white woman, and his reluctant commitment to black activism which leads to tragedy.
