William Saroyan
This imaginary and brief song of life is one of the most extraordinary and fabulous plays of our time. Its people are a spangled caravan, stumbling in search of the meaning of existence: "to be, beget, and begone." They are a fascinating lot who are accidentally caught together in the circus of life. They sing, share devout wishes, fall in love and, before they die, teach a cynic to understand that man lives less by science than by miracles of faith. Both the plot and the language, in their own way, have moments of exquisite brilliance.
