Luigi Pirandello, Marta Abba
Marta constantly finds herself serving as the ambassador between various wives and their husbands. She has never had the chance to marry herself, and her dream of marrying Fausto is crushed when he marries a stranger out of town. Marta is never bitter, and goes to great lengths to prepare the rooms for the newlyweds. When the bride arrives ill, Marta becomes her nurse. At this point another relative begins planting seeds of jealousy in the mind of the new bride, telling her that upon her death Marta will marry Fausto. Despair aggravates her illness, and she dies. The rumor-monger kills Fausto and tries to make it look like a suicide. Marta chases them all out, and is left to deal with the aftermath of the ordeal.
