Overview

This original and extremely funny comedy brightened the recent theatrical season in New York. The action of the play takes place in a frowsy apartment in upper Manhattan which has been converted into a sort of girls' residence. The girls who live there have very little in common except their desperate search for a man, and it is their fortunes we follow through the crowded events of one hectic weekend. Coming from various walks of life, they are sharply etched individuals, each with her own frustrating problems to be solved—including one girl we never see but who is certainly one of the most clearly drawn (and funniest) offstage voices in theatrical history. The main thread concerns the on-again, off-again romance between the charming and intelligent Katy and the dashing, debonair Mark. Mark can offer Katy nothing but love and a humdrum existence in the suburbs, with kids, household chores and PTA meetings, for which she hesitates to cast aside the fruits of hard years she has put in hacking out a career for herself. She is torn, first one way, then the other—until nature steps in and takes the decision out of her hands.
