Overview

The National Endowment for the Arts and the American Theatre Wing, in partnership with Disney Theatrical Productions and Samuel French, Inc (A Concord Theatricals Company) proudly present the Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge. This national competition is open to high school students who have a passion for writing songs that could be part of a musical theater production. With students from across the country able to enter the competition, almost 200 students from 36 states submitted an application in 2018. Those were reviewed by panels of professional theater artists in a blind competition with one duo and five individuals selected as finalists. Professional theater artists also worked as mentors and music directors with each of the six finalists, helping them refine and orchestrate their songs during a weekend workshop in New York City. The final competition took place in April before a live and webcast audience. The finalists' songs are published in this vocal selections book.
