Overview

The storyteller begins the tale on an empty stage by summoning three families to create a little town. The families are the Scarletts (the butchers), the Goldens (the bakers), the Greens (the candlestick makers). Each family brings on their house with a practical door and their children. Each family is costumed imaginatively in their named color: scarlets and pinks etc; yellows and golds; greens of all shades. They are grumpy and speak nothing but Argue and Contradict. Into the conflict wander Mish and Mash, two soldiers in old time uniforms, recently excused from the army. They are very hungry. Their horse Pansy, " a great little hoofer," attracts the attention of the kids who quarrel until the Stone Soup they create works its magic. And a town party! And living a little more peaceably just for today.
